Agoraphobia & Social Anxiety Support Group
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder, often precipitated by the fear of having a panic attack in a setting from which there is no easy means of escape. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia may avoid public and/or unfamiliar places. In severe cases, the sufferer may become confined to their home, experiencing difficulty traveling from this "safe place."
As for your relatives helping you, remember they help you because they care about you and want the best for you. Just communicate to them how you feel.
Another way to help would be to slowly start exposing yourself to the outdoors.
What helped me was getting my drivers licence because my car was my safe place. I know it's different for everyone though. I know everything will turn out ok for you.
Be gentle with yourself. I know how hard it is, I only make some of my appointments right now.
If you can, take a buddy or family member. I know my wife is my "Safe" person and that really helps me.
I know about how other's kindness wears thin. I met a woman at a church I went to a few times. We became friends. She was glad to take me to appointments. Then she got a job, and her retired husband was glad to take me to appointments. Then he got busy, and let me know even though he still never refused to take me to appointments, and now I hate asking him to take me.
I'm trying to get to my lawyer's office today. Yesterday was the first time in a long time that I had trouble getting out of the house on time. I'm scared.
I just got off the phone with my husband. I'm going to stay home today, manage my anxiety, and go out tomorrow. My husband will take me.
In the meantime, I'm waiting for an email that I'm supposed to get today regarding transportation services for people with disabilities. I contacted my local Independent Living Center and am working with a Peer Advocate who is helping me to deal with obstacles like transportation.
I recommend that you find out if a similar service exists where you are.
Its a tough problem to find answers to,but taking one day at a time helps when I can,but other days I panic and imagine the worst.
I long for the day when I can just breeze outside to the shops,as I feel Im doing a prison sentence of my own making.
Spring is around the corner,so im fuelled up with the hope that my mood will improve to allow me to try again.
I know also there are people with far worse things than I have so at times feel ashamed and foolish at even raising such an issue.
thanks again for all your help x
