Agoraphobia & Social Anxiety Support Group
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder, often precipitated by the fear of having a panic attack in a setting from which there is no easy means of escape. As a result, sufferers of agoraphobia may avoid public and/or unfamiliar places. In severe cases, the sufferer may become confined to their home, experiencing difficulty traveling from this "safe place."
I have never had many friends at all and people would always tell me that I needed to meet some people and get out some more.
I am in my late 30s now and when I was younger I did really want to know people and get invited out more but it just did not happen.
I think I was looking for friends more so because I felt odd and embarrassed about who I was. I was never understood by my parents and classmates or teachers and no I don't think they could relate to the anxiety I felt around people. I liked to stay home and read or listen to music by myself because for me this was safe.
I think if people had not been so mean thinking that something is wrong with me all the time I would have been happy and ok with staying at home alone. I just never meshed with people my own age in school even though there were some girls I really wanted to be friends with and some boys that I would have loved to get the chance to talk to. I was always looked at like the freak girl who no one liked and I never even had friends to begin with so its good that you have a few friends and it would be nice if they could be supportive of you.
I wish more people would just be supportive of one another.
Even now I just got asked to go to camp with one of my friends however I don't know many others who are going and I have a feeling that I will be the odd girl out. I think the others are all bringing their boyfriends or husbands. I wonder if I will just be sitting alone with no one to talk to. I am actually glad I have to work because then its an easy way out of going on this trip.
I just wish I could fit in a little better and maybe I could do some of this stuff.
Good Luck to you on everything.
Biggest wish is that you make a friend that accepts you as you are, and where you are, because you're right, the isolation isn't a great idea. I know I've been doing it for so long now and it's hard to come back. I get comfortable in there by myself. It's so much easier. But it's alone too.
You don't need to impress anyone.
Peace.
