I hear the phrase "you must love yourself before you can love others." Also no person, place or thing can fill the emptiness within.....only love for yourself can fill this void. How does one learn to do this? I feel so disconnected to myself and the inner child that was treated so badly many many years ago. How do I connect? Feel so lonely and lost. Can anyone give me some direction?
I'm glad you wrote. By writing you have indicated that you are willing to do what is needed to "get in touch" with your inner child.
I would suggest having your inner child write a letter to you. Some would add writing it with your non-dominant hand. What do you think this child has to say to you? When doing this exercise with a group here are some of the responses that I heard:
I'm so tired...please have us go to bed early.
Please feed me.
Don't forget that I'm always with you.
Help me let go of the pain (or anything else) by taking us to therapy.
What do you thing of these suggestions. I know others care.
I can tell you some tricks I used. By the way, the phrase I heard that I believed was Until one loves themself, they cannot feel they are loved. I read a lot. I learned that I first needed to be able to look at myself honestly. I had a few assets and a lot of excess baggage. I then decidced that I had to change. If I wanted to learn to love myself, then I had to act in ways that I felt were "good'. then I could praise myself or modify my behavior. I started working on doing the next 'right' thing. I asked trusted friends for help. I read books. I took courses in healthy relationships. I wrote affirmations for myself..starting with phrases such as "today I have value" I set goals for myself. One was don't act in ways that hurt yourself or other and do act in ways that help others and myself.
I started judging myself basd only on what I did each day. I didn't forget my past totally, but I no longer allowed by pase and my thoughts carried over from my past to control my feelings. I gradually started to accept myself...Some where along the way I actually stared to like me. I became grateful for the good stuff I had in my life. Like, a computer. I realized that 7 out of ten people on this earth will never see a personal computer let alone have one in their residence which they can use any time they wish. I have two.
Finally I guess I started to respect myself. I m doing a lot of right things each day. I still screw up from time to time, but that is going to happen. If I accidently hurt another person today I quicly move to try to repair the damage I have done.
