My son was Diagnosed with ADHD through a state Theripist. Before he started back at a new school I made them aware and he was evaluted for a 504/IEP and was denied. He scored above average on all testing done but they did not concider his emotional state or hyperness.


Now a few months in and this poor child spend more time with the principal then he does in class, he missed his friends birthday celebration, he was asked to stay back for the kids field trip. All while getting 100% in school work. It is so hard to explain to a elementary school child why he was not allowed to go pumpkin picking with his friends.


The teacher set up a behavior log which means she send me a list of all his "BAD" behaviour. This is crazy i get a daily log of "got out of seat" "was tapping pencil" my favorite and cause for him to be sent home.... "he popped a friends bubble"



I dont know what to do for my child, i would give him the world but the world is currently against him.



My son is off school this week and we been taking alot of 1on1 walks and talks and last night he told me he gets embarrassed when the Principal carrys him out of class in front of his friends...??? What??  Yes what i didnt know is when they want him to leave and he is now calm and collected more than once they have physically picked him up and removed him.


Im not sure what i can do or how to help him.

I am so very sorry that you are experiencing this. When your son was diagnosed, did they recommend medication? It might be something that you have strong feelings about, but I encourage you to do a little research before you decline this option. From my research, a combination of medication and behavior modification work best. Regarding the 504/IEP, I can understand why he did not qualify under an IEP, but I am surprised that a 504 plan was not developed. The law uses the term "educational impact" and sometimes, the interpretation is "academic impact". The school clearly only looked at "academic" impact. "Educational" impact is much broader and does include behavior, social, and emotional issues.. Do you think that you would have some success by bringing this distinction up to the school? It sounds like he requires some type of behavioral support, which might include a more defined behavior modification plan than the one that is in place.

Fredrica they did talk about medication but I didn't think at his age it was something he would need. I have read some kids grow out of this, I am not saying im sure he will but I am hopeful. How will I know if there is a change if he is medicated. Trust it scares me.

I completely understand your concern. It is not an easy decision, so continue to ask questions and do your research. If the medication is effective, you would notice an improvement in his behavior. In addition, he may actually be able to report to you in his own words that he feels different and more in control. My friends daughter went on medication for ADD towards the end of elementary school and stayed on medication during high school. It made a world of difference and was eventually able to go off. I have also worked with children who had significant difficulty paying attention in school and went on medication in middle school and they are performing beautifully at school.
