There is a commercial in my area where a father says into a smart phone "How do I help my daughter with her reading?" The voice on the phone responds with ( something like) "how to help internal bleeding". After 4 or 5 tries to get help for his daughter. the message on the phone says "Hey, I"m just showing you what it's like for your daughter each day".

This is a commercial for a website called understood.org. It is specifically for help in understanding different learning and attention disorders. I just looked at it, and it has a lot to offer. ( There was a place to become a member and get specialized info, but I didn't go there) .

I just thought I"d share this with you all. Perhaps it can give parents and those of us with ADD and other disorders some ideas and strategies for life. -Holly

Thanks so much, Holly! We are raising our grandson who was diagnosed 5 years ago with ADD. He's in 4th grade now and spelling/reading/math has become more difficult. His psychologist just tested him and he does have a learning disorder.

Just a bit of advice. There are a lot of success stories for kids who have ADD and a learning disability.

My older son was the same. he always found school hard. He had ADD type characteristics and a learning disability. He learned to work very hard at school and as he got older he did really well at school. Especially in high school. He has never been great in Math but he was determined and now he is in University doing extremely well but not taking math.

So, I made sure I had a good relationship with the special ed people from grade 1 onward. it made a huge difference. I advocated for him all the time and then he learned to do so as well but the relationship with the teachers and the special ed people are the key to their success I found. I made sure he was at a school where they had a large team of special ed people and he got a lot of support.

Most of these kids are pretty smart. They just have some impairments to their learning that they need accomodations for.

I found it just got better and better for my older son. My younger one is gifted and has some ADD characterisitics too but everything still comes easy for him but he doesnt try hard at all at school and my older one achieved way more academically!

if they learn to work hard and be determined, life is much easier for these kids.
