Tuesday was my son's 6th birthday. One of my friends came over while we were gone and left a present for him on the doorstep. It was so sweet of her and he was so excited about it. It was a remote control monster truck. He went all over the house hunting batteries for this truck (she forgot to put some with it) until he found some that would work. He played with it for about 15 mins till the batteries went dead. All the rest of the evening he hunted batteries for this truck because he just could not stand the fact that he couldn't play with it. The next day my friend brought him some batteries and he played and played with this truck. He seemed so happy to get this truck. Today I am in my room and I hear this smashing sound and my daughter hollering "I'm telling Mom", so I rush in the living room to see what the commotion is all about and he is standing there stomping the truck to pieces with his boots!!!! I couldn't believe it! I was so angry at him for having such complete disregard for what my friend had done for him. She didn't have to get him a present at all! It was because she loved him that she did it. I couldn't believe he had done that...what in the world was going through his head??? I found out while ago that while I was gone this morning when he got up, my 17 yr old son forgot to give him his medicine like I had instructed. I don't know if that had anything to do with his actions or not. I just don't get it. I am about half tempted to take all his toys back to the store and just get him clothes and a couple dollar tree toys for Christmas. What would you do?

Aestu..my son is ADHD...he was not learning anything in school..on the brink of being kicked out of school for his behavior....would get angry at teachers and other kids and pick things up (books, blocks, chairs) and throw them. I did not want to put him on meds..but I had no choice. He is a totally different child when he is on his medicine...a child others can love. I think that justifies it.

How dare you attack my parenting!!!! I have raise 4 children and have done it all by myself. I have done a pretty good job too I might say. I love my son very much and would love him unconditionally no matter what!!! How dare you!!!! I have gone through every means possible to teach him and deal with his ADHD..not that I have to justify that to you. I was seeking advice from mothers who know what I am going through.... not seeking judgement. He is in public school kindergarten..not preschool. I am not some parent who just puts their kid on meds to keep from dealing with him...I have 3 other kids who grew up without medication...believe me when I tell you that I was against it but now having finally gave in to his doctors advice I am glad I did. My son is learning things he couldn't before. Simple things that no matter how hard we tried he just could not focus on it. I don't need people like you telling me I am a bad mother for it!!!! I don't know how you raise your kids but I for one want people..his teachers, friends, etc. to love my child. I will love him no matter what. But anyone who is not his mother won't feel that way..I don't want him to be that child that every teacher dreads seeing everyday. He is learning, he is able to focus, and he is able to control his impulses. He is still my sweet loving little boy...just a much happier and well adjusted one with the help of his medication.

I would like to point out that this is a SUPPORT group. We are here to support each other.

Being impulsive is a big symptom of ADHD and it is one that needs to be dealt with as the parent of the child sees fit. It is NEVER an easy decision to put a child on medicine and I do not know any one on here that has made that decision without thoroughly thinking it over.

The matter does need to be dealt with, but taking ALL of his toys away will have an opposite effect of what you want. Calmly tell him that that was unacceptable and that he cannot expect to get nice things if he cannot take care of them. Have him write an apology note to your friend (it's up to you if it gets to her; the point is that he learns how to put together a proper apology). And then, leave it at that. Anytime a medicine dose is missed, you can expect a noticeable change in his behavior. In my personal opinion, I think that behavior therapy at his age would do wonderful. The therapist could teach him coping skills to help him understand and fight his impulses. My son is 7 and has been in behavior therapy for 2 years. It has been essential in our journey. Maybe a note on the fridge will help everyone remember the medicine next time.

So, mom, take a deep breath and let it out slowly. YOU know what is best for YOUR child. Don't let anyone make you doubt yourself. There is a group on here called 'Parents of Children with Adhd'. I'm in that group as is so many others just like us. =) I hope you have a Happy New Year's!

Thank you Michaelina'smommy...I am looking for more therapy for my son as well as myself in learning how to deal with his ADHD...He does have a specially trained school counselor that he meets with daily and she has provided alot of good tips and helpful techniques. It is a learning process for us all. Anyways Happy New Year to you too...I will go check out that other support group..thanks!

It takes a village to raise a child? What world are you living in??? I am the only one raising these kids..and I am doing a pretty good job at it. Get off your high horse and take care of your own family and leave us alone. You obviously have wayyy to much time on your hands and don't know crap about what you are talking about.

I am not worried about him..I know I am a good mom. I have 4 kids. My oldest is 21..in school for nursing and is a very bright young lady. My next oldest son is 17 and is the most polite well-mannered teenager you have ever seen. I get many many compliments on him. He was a "handful" when he was young but not ADHD. Just all boy. He is an honor roll student. My 3rd child is my little drama queen..ha ha..but she is a good kid and well liked. My 4th child is my son who has ADHD. He is a sweet loving little boy most of the time. He just has trouble with his emotions, focus and temper. My first husband died of cancer. I raised the first two alone. My second husband and I divorced soon after my son was born. He gets them his every other weekend but doesn't spend any quality time with them. When I say I have raised them alone I mean it. I have brought them up in church and have taught them love and respect for people. I feel like I have done a good job especially considering the circumstances that have affected their lives. They are all happy well adjusted kids and I make no apologies for having to put my youngest on medication that helps him stay in control despite numerous different types of discipline used. He has been able to learn and love school and thats good enough for me. No judgemental troll is going to make me doubt my parenting skills. Our jobs as parents is to love our children and bring them up with the best ways we can at helping them be productive young citizens. I believe with all my heart that is what I am doing.

I'm very happy to hear that. It took my son's therapist telling me that the way my son is isn't my fault for me to get it because I listened to the wrong people. My son is my oldest and he has ADHD/ Asperger's/ Sensory Modulation Dysfunction. He is one heck of a handful. LOL. If it wasn't for my faith and my Sunday School group (seriously I have a school guidance counselor, a special education teacher, and 2 psychologists all in 1 class with me), I don't know if I could have made it.

I completely understand that. I know my faith has really gotten me through alot in my life...not just with my son but other areas. My Sunday School class has been a tremendous support, although I don't have anyone with any of those credentials. However I do have a 5th grade teacher in my class and she has given me lots of advice. Advice and support is wonderful and that is what we are here for.
