ADHD / ADD Support Group
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) are more common than you might think. It is a syndrome that exhibits symptoms such as hyperactivity, forgetfulness, mood shifts, poor impulse control, and distractibility. Join others who suffer from these conditions and share your experiences.
I have spent too many years of my life thinking that I was a failure or somehow had character flaws when in reality I was dealing with a real condition that was not my fault nor did it reflect on my character. In fact, I have brilliantly created work-arounds in my coping strategies to offset the ADD symptoms! I bet you have too!
Hang in there with new medications, it can be a challenging time if you experience side-effects. You are your own best advocate for getting the dosage and type of medication that works for you.
You are not alone even if you are by yourself. :)
1. Work on organization. Calendar all dates and deadlines. Keep papers in a consistent area. Work on uniform procedures.
2. Criticism You may do some things wrong. Rather than broad-based demeaning criticism, create a constructive suggestions sheet. When you do something wrong, evaluate why, and write down recommendations for better procedures and try to follow them.
3.
As far as ‘solving’ ADHD, that’s not really possible. You can learn new ways of doing things that work for your ADD brain, but it will always be there. It isn’t a problem to be solved, so much as a different way of thinking and being that has strengths, as well as weaknesses.

1. Procedures, Procedures. Develop better methods of organization. First realize this is demanding, my wife is quite well-organized but still spends plenty of time. Some components.
A . Write down all deadlines in one place. Anticipate problems and issues, so have things done well-before any deadline. Work to be on time, at least 15 minutes before any appointment time.
B. Have a list of things (10 is good) to do each day.
C. Develop procedures for addressing common tasks like paying certain bills.
2. Note problems and methods of correction. What did I do wrong and what would have solved this.
3. Learn to take suggestions and get help. Listen calmly and try not to be defensive.
4. Use your ADHD to your advantage, use your energy to do multiple tasks.
5. First achieve competence and only afterwards seek excellence.
