FCAT (state standardized) testing starts today, and my son worked himself up all weekend on how he is going to fail and have to stay back a grade, despite all the encouragement I tried giving him. He's really scared that if he tries, he'll fail, so I think he'd rather fail for not trying! What can I do to stop him from setting himself up for failure?

I know when my son gets worried about something, I ask what are the specific worries ... certain subjects? the form of the test? Find out the greatest worries. Then explain what to do when faced with those situations. For instance, if he struggles just seeing a lot of questions on a page, remind him to just zero in on one question at a time. Give him strategies for overcoming his specific worries.

Also, does he have a history of failing? If not, remind him of that. If he's struggled in the past, remind him of how he's overcome past obstacles.

How did your son do with his test and his ADDitude?

The first day, he came home and said it wasn't as hard as he thought it would be. He has an IEP that gives him extended time on the standardized tests, as well as putting him in a room with fewer distractions.
He finished the rest of the week with loathing, but cooperation as well. We won't have the results back for a few more weeks.
