Im just tired. Im tired of living with ADD and never feeling like anything I do is right or good enough. Im tired of watching my son who has severe ADHD struggle through life. Im also tired of other people and their opinions. My husband is one of them. I have known my son has ADHD since he was about 3 and hes now 8. He was diagnosed when he was 5. My husband is still in denile. He seems to think our son doesn't need medicine and we just need to whip his butt and that will solve it all. Im sorry but no amount of whippin a child is going to fix the chemical imbalance in his brain. He also had an accident when he was a year old and hit his head and fractured the left side of his skull. Ive often wondered if that has anything to do with his ADHD. I know it can be hereditary and I have it, but I cant help but wonder if his head injury made it worse. He went from being such a well behaved sweet little boy at a year old to acting up and being a handful in 3 months. He started acting up around 15months old and it gradually got worse. Its just hard, its hard enough facing the challenges of getting through everyday life having ADHD myself and having a child with it as well and a husband who isn't the best at being supportive really just makes it worse. My husband is very narrow minded about a lot of things. If he doesn't agree with something then hes not talking about it and that's it. It drives me nuts. I want to homeschool my son next year but my husband knows a family that homeschooled and didn't do well with it because the parents didn't teach them they let them look at the answer book and so because they aren't that smart he thinks homeschooling is a bad thing. Funny thing is both his sisters homeschool their kids. Im worried about my son. He struggled all through kindergarten and his first year in 1st grade. His IEP didn't become effective until 2 months before school was out last year. He had failing grades and the school was going to pass him to 2nd grade. We said no way, we held him back in 1st grade and it was the best decision we could've made. He is doing a lot better this year. Still struggles but nothing like the two years before that. My problem is he has no friends, he plays by himself at recess and he is so meticulous during his class time during centers that hes not getting everything done and not fully learning everything. If I homeschooled him he wouldn't have all the distractions he has as school and could take his time and really learn what hes being taught. Anyone have any advice on helping him want to make friends? Im thinking if I cant make it work to homeschool him this coming school year I will the following year. My fear is he is going to start getting picked on as he gets older if he stays a loner and doesn't play with others, and become an outcast. If you've read this far you can see I have a lot on my mind so sorry if I kinda jumped from one subject to the next lol. I just want my son to have a better life than I did. My parents didn't take me to the doctor and have me tested. I lived with ADD struggling all through every area of my life especially school and my parents would get so frustrated with me but I didn't know what was wrong with me or why I was so different. I once got 9 cracks on my bare butt with a belt for 3 Fs I got in the 6th grade. My mom must not have realized I got those Fs because I was struggling and overwhelmed, she thought I was being lazy. I was also grounded to my room for a month with the exception of asking to go to the restroom or school. After that month I was aloud out of my room but not outside for a while, then I was aloud outside but couldn't talk to any friends. It was probably about 2-3 months before I was aloud to have a normal life again on top of the whippins with belt. Ive talked with my mom about it and she wishes should could take it back, she said it makes her sick when she thinks about it. I have forgiven her but I will never forget it. I was also picked on a lot in school and as I previously stated that's a big fear of mine that my son will be picked on as well. Problem is he will get physical and hit someone if they make him mad enough, then he will be the one in trouble instead of the one who starts it. It makes your head spin trying to make the right decision on something that will affect your childs entire life...
I"m pretty depressed and overwhelmed myself right now so don't have much to contribute. But your post made me feel less alone, thank you. Wishing you the best...
