ADHD / ADD Support Group
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) are more common than you might think. It is a syndrome that exhibits symptoms such as hyperactivity, forgetfulness, mood shifts, poor impulse control, and distractibility. Join others who suffer from these conditions and share your experiences.
A few suggestions that serve me well are:
- Cease fighting anyone and anything. (A trial lawyer might be able to have an articulate debate to crush a defendant. I on the other hand have a spat with a co-worker and re-play in my head for two weeks and let it distract me from other commitments and I suffer so I won't engage in fights).
- HALT (Don't make decisions while Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired.) If my basic needs aren't met I'm not positioned for success so I don't force the throttle when I know that I don't have the runway to get up in the air.
- Start a Journal: When failures (and successes) happen, catalog them so that you see, what happened that I will never repeat" and "what were my strengths to grow on"?
Acceptance of is a big part of it too, learn about the symptoms so that you don't put so much focus on yourself when it is obviously the character traits of ADHD at play and then plan accordingly.
- Be early and be prepared. Have you ever known someone that is regularly late or always has a gas tank on empty? They behave in a very defensive non-committal way with pretty important stuff b/c they are not equipped to preform on the flip side if you are 10 minutes early for everything then things seem to have a momentum all their own and we don't have to push so hard.
- Look before you leap. I have seen in myself that everything sounds like a great idea and I am quick to engage in things but I am horrible at finishing them. Courses, books you name it so I have learned to give myself the respect to qualify things better before I commit to things that I may not be qualified to do or really need to do. This leaves some room on my plate for things that really earn my attention and then I can do them successfully and feel good about the things that I do invite into my life.
- Cooler heads prevail: give so yourself the room to learn from situations and let others have their own opinions. Sometimes the best comeback is, "you might be right" and leave it at that.
To brighter days!
