I have a very smart ADHD son in high school. He is really smart but he does not put much effort into school. He lives to be with his friends and he is an adrenoline junkie. He does not think drinking is bad in high school. We do not want him drinking or drugging - can anyone make any suggestions how approach this?

Teens are some of the hardest people to figure out as they generally internalize everything and their actions are a direct reflection of a deeper issue going on inside of them. Finding out the underlying issue is the best way to solve the whys of their behavior. I found this article about "Reducing the Risk for Substance Abuse" related to teens. Hopefully it can be of some help to you. Prayers!! Here is the link to article. http://bit.ly/2vBrLGZ

That is a great article. I like Focus on the Family a lot. Our son has been raised in the church and knows what the rules are. He is an adrenaline junkie and lives in the now. I think parent support is optimal in navigating through the teen years in our society today. Especially with the influence of a snapchat story and the anonymity that some social media sights depict. Ultimately, it is hard because some parents want to be cool and their child's friend and make them "happy" and those of us who are trying to equip them with hard work, accountability are not always popular. If more parents partnered together against high school parties then the adolescent drug and alcohol rate, mental health illness, academic performances, and healthy family functioning would improve. That being said, it is really hard.

I agree 100%. Since you are familiar with Focus and church, my very best advice I can give you is take each and every concern you have to the foot of the cross. Pray for him. Each time you feel worried about something he's doing or may be doing, go to Jesus and pray and leave it with him. Pray for his protection and pray that the Lord reveal himself to your son in a real and mighty way. I have found (I have 3 boys - two in college and one finishing up high school) that at the age they are now, my prayers can do more than my words can. Of course there's always a time for words, but prayer is key. I will be praying for you! It is extremely hard in this world to raise our children when the world is against everything we are doing. My favorite verse in the Bible for moms is Galatians 6:9 "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Parenting is hard and this verse always keeps me going when I feel like I have nothing left. ((Hugs))

I have ADD and I was like your son in high school. I'm 31 years old now and I turned out to be more of a success that anyone would of thought who knew me in high school. This is due in part to my parents, especially my dad who saw the road I was going down and had several serious one on one talks with me. I would say just show that you care in every step of the way with and eventually he will get it. Remember, there are other parents who are going through the same thing as you, but keep in mind you need to make your son realize that you care 300% more for him than those parents will ever care for their children. That's what got me to turn my life around.
