ADHD / ADD Support Group
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) are more common than you might think. It is a syndrome that exhibits symptoms such as hyperactivity, forgetfulness, mood shifts, poor impulse control, and distractibility. Join others who suffer from these conditions and share your experiences.
Imagine this scenario. Six children, ages 3, 4, 6, 6, 9, and 10. Sitting in the living room after dinner watching Spongebob. All sans one are completely zombified by the show, watching slack jawed, dead to the world, completely engrossed. The one not sitting is my 6 year old son previously mentioned. He is completely engrossed in the show as well. However, he is standing up, kind of rocking side to side, step from one foot to the other, then he starts hopping in place, still watching the show. Suddenly he starts running in a circle, then down the hall and back again to continue watching TV. He sits on the floor and starts rolling around, not taking his eyes off the TV. Then he hops up off the floor and starts hopping again, this time on one foot, then he switches to the other foot and hops. Hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, spinnnnnnnn, run in circles then take off through the house, back to the TV and it just keeps going till bed time.
You may say he's wound up because of the busy day or because it's close to bed time. He is this hyper ALL day, EVERY day.
Not ADHD you say??? Then what?
And gues what, I have even asked why he does the things he does. His respones.....
"I don't know"
"I didn't"
"Because it helps me think"
And when he's feeling really ornery he'll say, "because I can".
First you tell me he needs discipline, then you say I'm too controlling. Now which is it? I discipline when it's needed, i.e. Being mean to the cat, spitting at his brother, or throwing toys at the TV. I allow him to express himself any way he likes. From what clothes he wants to wear to the hair cut he asked for 3 days ago. And if he's such a "typical" 6 year old, why does his teacher feel he isn't? She's been teaching 1st grade for a VERY long time.
We do lots of activities together, his favorite in drawing pictures. That's when he's the most calm. However, that's also when he tics the most. Or maybe I just notice it more when he's not bouncing of the walls.
Oh, and btw.....,

If you don't beleive ADHD exists, you're not being supportive, now are you?
Jazandra - make an appointment with his doctor - tell him everything he does. And YES Aestu - children with ADHD NEVER STOP - THEY ALWAYS KEEP GOING!!!!! And for it being a myth...I'm sure any of the partents would be willing to send their child to your house for 24 hours WITHOUT the medication and lets see how much of a MYTH you really think it is. It is closed minded persons like you that project the negitive images on these children. You wouldn't call diabeties a myth or is it that just from lack of disipline? Unless you are treating this child and you have a medical degree you have NO BUSINESS telling a parent that is looking for support and heve questions answered that it is a myth. Get off the soap box - someone elts needs it.
My son was 2 when we found out he had ADHD there is a difference in being active and being out of control. Most kids with ADHD you can disipline but 2 seconds later they are on to something different and have forgotten what you just told them.
when you find out forsure your child has ADHD please make sure you have a Federal 504 and/or an IPP filled out with your school. This will LEAGLY protect your child and his rights to an equil education. Good Luck!!!
His doctor completely agrees that there is definately something more than just misbehavior. She wants to send him to a specialist in Pheonix (3 hours away) but she needs some documentation from his school to justify the referral to Medicaid. The school wants to sit on their thumbs and take their time, so I just printed out a teacher's checklist and sent it to school with my son. Tomorrow I'm taking it to his doctor. We should have a referral within a week. We are moving forward and it feels good.
