There are plenty of web sites out there that explain how to deal with ADHD. For example, you can make lists, take breaks, take walks, and do other things to adjust. There is a ton of resources on how to study when you have ADHD, and of course, a ton of stuff for parents of kids with ADD which you might be able to get ideas from.
I'm a borderline case, and I've been a pretty good student each time I went back to school, and even now when I study to keep up for my job. I study in short spurts, but I keep up. I study every day, and often get distracted and cannot absorb any more information in a session or even a day. I don't beat myself up, knowing that I might be able to concentrate better and absorb more tomorrow, and I never put things off or try to cram. Sometimes I feel like I haven't done any studying because I've been bouncing around and taking so many breaks and walks, but over the long term, I find I have learned a lot of real world stuff I can retain and use on the job.
I'm not at all suggesting you avoid medication. If you find one that works and doesn't have nasty side effects, do what you and your doctors think is helpful. I am saying that medication may not be the only option, and that you should not feel pressured to be "cured" if that is your frustration right now. Keep doing research on your own and asking around.
