(Background) I have been struggling with a train load of personal issues since last May. Was fired September 25th, (Yea 5 months) and I moved to San Antonio two months ago. My job is finally taking off and I am trying to go out on Thursday nights because I spend the weekend with the family. I just turned 29 and did not even go to dinner because every one is struggling to pay bills right now. Then March is a really bad month for, so I had to go out even though I knew my cousin had homework. My cousin doesnt understand this yet, but life is so hard right now, but I really care about the little guy. I live with my Aunt, his grandmother, and he also stays there. He comes from a broken home and his mother is having a hard time still dealing with the child. Anyway

My 11 yr old cousin had a reading/writing assignment last night. The past several assignments we have had a lot of difficulty getting him to do it. I knew something was up but did not know what. Finally last night, I got home late and his grandmother had been working with him, he threw a fit. I talked with for a long time, he cried a lot because he was so upset. Finally he told me he hates to read and write. From all of his other assignments he doesnt appear to have any disabilities. He just seems not to want to do it. He has been diagnosed with ADHD, and I believe it to some extent, but I believe his problem with school is he is bored. He excels in Science and Math. We are looking at getting him tested for gifted. He hates school but we believe it is because he isnt being challenged enough in most of his classes.

What do I do with him if he hates reading and writing? If he thinks the 6th grade is bad wait till he gets to HS! I need advice, PLEASE! I just dont where to turn.

hi i have a 11yr old son who is the same he loves the lessons that you do with you hands or do not use your brain to much such as maths ict science tech amd music he has a laptop to do other work english is so had for adhd kids because there do not understand if he will not write ask him if his arms and wrist heards my son has dyspraxia so his arms have not got the strenght in them to write all day my son is in yr 6 and finds it so hard the school is frighted he will not cope so there are looking for somewere that knows how kids with adhd think for sept

I know the kid is strong, skinny as a pipe cleaner, but strong. We rough house all the time, and I have to keep reminding him, despite being overweight I am athletic! He has gotten a good pounding a couple of times and I have to be carefull. The rug burn is still healing!

Just a thought... Since he's good at math and science but struggles with reading and writing, how's his spelling and or penmanship... Go to www.dys-add.com... Go over the warning signs and or watch their free videos on line, if it seems like they are "singing his song" then that website is a great resource for you to get him help and advice... I'm pretty far on the same journey with my son and can help also, just send me a message... Hugs, lylajean

i love posts that give you background, because then you know so much more about the person- sometimes it can be hard to respond to these things, so thank u for that.

it might be a good idea to condition him to like reading and writing. one way to do it is to get easy-level fun reading and have him learn to like it.

i feel like add/adhd should be renamed "i hate school disorder"... and these so-called "symptoms", ie messy penmanship, could just as easily be symptoms of "i hate school disorder"... if the child doesn't like school, why the heck should he bother to write neatly?!

My 8 yr. old son was diagnosed a year ago with ADHD and he reads well but hates to and we've always struggled with his writing. At times it feels like he's being stubborn on purpose but it sounds like a common theme. He does fine in the right frame of mind but those times are few and far between.

i can say the same thing i hate reading and writting to for me it is the hardest thing and math and Science are one of my best classes and i don't have a problem with them but when it comes to reading you have to sit and just look at words there is no fun in that and what i have done is try to make a game out of reading and writting that seems to help me a lot

Sounds li8ke yoru son may be GT (gifted and talented). I may sound like a broken record, but as I hjave ADD and am a Special Education teacher, I have the following input.
1. Get yrou child an IEP through the school system. He may not like to read and write because he has a learning disability. It IS possible for a child to be gifted in math and science and totally TANK in reading. The opposite is true for me. I was TERRIBLE with math and science growing up and LOVED reading, writing and history.

Also, young me especially havbe a hard time self-regulating. If your nephew isn't active,try to find him a Kung Fu class and Tai Chi. These specifically are great for teaching self-discpline, meditation, and self-control. King Fu and Tai Chi are related, and both involve deep breathing, etc. Young boys need this. Trust me. I work with pre-K kids all day.
