Addison's Disease Support Group
Addison's disease (also known as chronic adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism) is a rare endocrine disorder. It is estimated that it affects about 1 to 2 in 100,000 people. It occurs when the adrenal glands, seated above the kidneys, fail to produce enough of the hormone cortisol and, sometimes, the hormone aldosterone

Hi, can u please tell me how much extra steroids u need to take if u have surgery. I'm having a procedure and I don't totally trust my dr thanks
cookiennan
My doc says double the dose if you have a fever of 101. I would not do more than that for anything. Now the injection they give you when you are in a crisis is 100mg, I think. I did not increase mine when I had my endoscopy and colonoscopy. I just talked to the anesthesiologist prior to the procedure and made sure she knew I had Addison's. She monitored it during the procedure and I was fine. Talk to the doctors when you get there. Good luck.

Thank u so much, my internist wanted to give me solu-medrol and prednisone after surger, I have chronic Lyme and can't suppress my immune system, my endo says triple it, I don't trust either one, their stressing me out. I think double b4 procedure, then double Cortef few days after? Do y'all agree? I've never had to take that much and I'm so scared, I took to lots of celestone shots and medrol dose packs and that's why I'm in this mess, made Lyme explode and adrenals crash, thanks for info

Yes, very helpful thank u, 4 am that's interesting, I never heard of that, I been waking up early and can't go back to sleep and I'm always so tired, wonder if that has something to do with it? Thanks for ur reply. I've been told different things by my drs but typically how long do u need to double ur steroids after surgery? The info u gave me says 24 hrs? I've never taken that much Cortef b4, and I have to take solu-Cortef shot, I e never taken that much I'm scared, how does it make u feel, prob will start new discussion just to c responses, thank u

When I had my child, we doubled the steroids the day of birth with a shot of solu-cortef and the day after we doubled the steroids and the 2nd day after I was back to normal dosing.
