You do have to be careful with your diet. Making a food diary might help you narrow down what causes you problems. For me it's things with hot sauce, or a lot of garlic, or onion.
I gained weight also after going on steroids, then menopause. After 18 years I've finally lost 40 lbs this year, but the doctors don't know why, either do I. You do have to keep active if you can. I walk, and garden everyday.
You might want to post your question in the GERD and Heartburn support group. They are very knowledgable over there.
Hope you get the answers you need. Good luck.
My diet consists of bland food not a lot of fruits and veggies there hard for me to digest. A lot of unseasoned chicken and white rice, white bread and oatmeal. I stay away from fried and fatty foods too hard to digest and I get sick. If I don't stop way before I'm full I also get sick. Hope this helps .
