I have had Addison's and IBS for over 5 years. I don't know how diverticulitis effects you, but the IBS comes on after the adrenal crisis starts and then they feed on each other. It is a very difficult cycle to stop. Good luck. My GI doctor has not been able to do much to help.

I have AD & diverticulosis, not 'itis'. During a crisis, my entire GI tract goes crazy, bleeding, you name it. The back pain is literally intolerable and I always end up in the hosp. One ER GI suggested IBS, another said diverticulitis. The Chief of Endo ruled out IBS & said IBS is a generic term used for something bigger. With us, GI involvement is a symptom of AD.

Last month EMS had to transport me to the ER and administered IV morphine, even before I arrived at the hosp. The only things that help, have been IV morphine and IV fluids. I cannot take anything by mouth during an attack. They both releive the pain and clam down the entire GI tract. I am at a loss for prevention and at-home treament. I follow the recommended divertic. diet, but still have flare-ups.

It's been my experience that GIs are absolutely useless in treating any sort of AD/GI complications. A good endo is the key. I just began with a new endo and so far, so good, but I haven't had a crisis since I started treating with him. He is very well aware of the AD/GI connection, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

My heart goes out to both of you. It's a debilitating vicious cycle.
