Addison's Disease Support Group
Addison's disease (also known as chronic adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism) is a rare endocrine disorder. It is estimated that it affects about 1 to 2 in 100,000 people. It occurs when the adrenal glands, seated above the kidneys, fail to produce enough of the hormone cortisol and, sometimes, the hormone aldosterone
I was on 20mg hydrocortisone for about six months. My adrenal insufficiency was due to mold exposure. I had a systemic fungus infection that originated from a biopsy (mold in my breast). I recently found out that I had an additional exposure (quite severe) at a building where I worked as a contractor. The first day I thought they were going to have to call 911. Anyway I go for more labs next week but I believe I am cured of the adrenal insufficiency. I have been totally off the steroids for about three weeks and I'm doing great. It's amazing how we recover when you are treated for the cause and not the symptoms. I'm happy happy.
