Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
Just wanted to give you all a quick update on me. We were gearing up to get admitted on the 19th when I caught a cold last Friday. I am mostly over it but the doc did cultures and I was positive for rhinovirus (i.e. a cold). Though I never had a fever and only have a little cough now, they want to delay 2 weeks since it takes about 3 weeks to clear the system of residual virus. We are still waiting to confirm the new schedule, and pray this second delay still works with our donor. I'll let you all know when we have the exact dates.
Andy and Steve, are you guys still on track for October transplants? It's nice to be going through this scary process with so many friends and supporters on here. Looks like the three of us will still be on similar timelines, and I'd love for us all to keep in touch on here with our progress. I've read the threads from 2014 when so many went through transplants and it's been a great motivator to read the ups and downs and see how the survivors are all doing now.

There are so many rhinovirus infections going around. Best to be over all of it before going through the conditioning procedure. I wish you a speedy recovery from the cold and then on to a smooth transplant.

I agree with everyone its better to be safe than sorry. My son was pne of the 2014 SCT members, he is almost 14 months post transplant and the doctor says he is doing great and I am sure you will too.

They are bringing my sister in next Tuesday (October 20th) to begin the harvesting process. Last I heard, I'm scheduled to be admitted November 2nd or 3rd to begin the conditioning chemo, but, that is always subject to change depending on how fast or slow harvesting the stem cells go.
As far as I'm concerned though, we are still going through this at the same time. I hope your cold clears up nicely so that there are no further delays!
Julie, Navy has been amazing. They continue to be although I don't know for how much longer. I expect that it will continue for another few months.
Lea, I guess that the rhinovirus was good news. Counts are higher for Tony due to that I assume?
Andy, I think our days match exactly...:) I am leaning back on Naval Academy memories from Plebe Summer and Plebe year. Both sucked...but having folks going through it with you made it all tolerable.

Wishing you a speedy recovery from your cold. I know you are ready to get this transplant underway. The Air force has been great with us too. I guess in the past it was an automatic medical retirement, but with the changes in how the SBP works with active duty military now it isn't necessary anymore (to financially protect your family with a medical retirement). So far they haven't told him to hit the road (and it has been 3 years) :) I'm praying for a very smooth recovery from your transplant. You need to get back to duty and off your vacation that the tax payers are paying for! Ok, that was just a little military humor my husband would say about himself when he was in the hospital. Wishing you a speedy recovery so you and your family can get back to doing all the things you love to do!
