Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Hello everyone,

I am curious how long most of you waited between your last chemo and your pre-BMT chemo/radiation? Julian is 2 weeks out from his BMB that showed him to be in complete remission, and he is most likely going to start pre-transplant chemo next Wednesday. This week he will be doing all of his pre-transplant appointments. By the time he has pre-transplant chemo and radiation, he will be about 7.5 weeks post-chemo and a little over 3 weeks post-BMB. Is that pretty standard? I'm just nervous about a relapse before transplant. Thank you all!

Hi Jacki,
It doesn't sound like your docs think it is a great amount of time to have no treatment for Julian so I'm sure it will be fine. I finished my second consolidation on 4 Dec 13 and commenced my pre-transplant chemo on 3 Feb 14 and they said it was highly unlike I would relapse in that time. It still made me nervous though :)

That does make me feel better. That is almost exactly the same time frame that we are looking at! It seems like most people wait at least a week or two after their BMB. We will be just over three, so I don't feel like they could have made things happen much faster...just stresses me out. We have been told that the time frame is urgent from the beginning...hence the reason for cord blood over bone marrow donor or even the cord blood from my baby (if it is a match). So glad to have so many positive experiences on this site!

Although I do not have any SCT experience, I am so glad to hear that precious Julian is on his way to a lifetime of good health. Please know your family is in my family's daily prayers.

I was around 7 weeks from the last consolidation before my transplant also. If I would have put it off till after the holidays (dec 27 transplant date) I would have had to have another round of consolidation because it would have backed me up a couple of weeks. Praying for Julians complete cure.

A little under 2 months. Things got pushed back a little as my count recovery was slow and then we suspected my sister was getting sick. (She was my halpo donor)

Went in for consolidation Feb 14. Transplant Chemo April 6th day 52

Hi Jacki,

My last chemo was Aug 3 and I'll go in for transplant chemo prep on Oct 14, so that's a little over 10 weeks. My doc was ok with it because I had 0% blasts and 0% MRD at my last BMB on Aug 26.

Way to go Lora! Julian had 0% MRD too! In fact, because of that, he will now have only chemo pre-transplant, but no radiation. His transplant date is October 17th. Best of luck to you! We are praying for you!

I had the same anxiety about relapsing before BMT and I actually pushed them to get the ball rolling. I went in for my consolidation round on October 28th (the day before Sandy hit) and went in for my transplant prep on December 14th, so about 6 weeks in between. Since I was FLT3 positive I felt it was important to get to transplant ASAP after consolidation. The hospital was moving much too slowly for me, they would have waited until after New Year's if I hadn't insisted on doing it sooner.

Jacki,

Sounds very standard to me. He should be fine. As I have said many times---don't look over your shoulder. Julian will not be relapsing. Soon you will be able to exhale. In the meantime, just keep breathing.

Jacki, mum had her last consolidation in Aug 2013 and didn't have her BMT until March 2014 ... It was meant to be in Jan 2014 but was pushed back.

She was still in remission in March 2014 :)
