Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
My Doc called yesterday (I was panicked for a moment cause she has never done this, usually it is the PA), and told me my thyroid gland is failing and that I would need to be put on meds for it for the rest of my life. She said it is one of the many complications that come with the chemo. Chemo has already almost destroyed my vision, now this. Anyone else here heard of this or have it come up? Thanks.

I always panic when my doctor calls at home. Chemo damages the thyroid and mine is hypothyroidism with nodules. They put me on synthroid for the rest of my life. It is manageable and you need to get a really good endocrinologist. The medication is taken in the morning by itself. If you are on any other meds you need to take them at a different time. See if you can get a full thyroid panel TSH, T3, T4, and they can check your antibodies to see if it is autoimmune. Some people are hyper and others hypo. I hope this helps when your thyroid is not working it can really mess with your metabolism and energy level depending on what type you are diagnosed with. Good luck.

She also complains of vision problems but the doc told her not to worry about getting that checked till done with chemo and recouped a bit because it would change too quickly to spend the money on it now.
Oh the joys of leukemia treatment but I just thank God that it has so far saved her life and I'm sure you feel the same. It is always nice to hear how well you and the others on here are doing!
