Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

I am wondering what others' experiences have been with blood counts recovering after chemo? My husband is worried because Julian is on day 30 of this new induction, and counts still are not stable. His anc has been .1 for three days, but platelets and RBC are still not up. Based on stories I have read, it seems like slower count return often yields better results. Not only that, but he was given a high dose regime instead of traditional induction this time, in hopes of getting him right back in remission. Previously, he took 27 days to recover from induction, but only 22-24 days for other rounds. He went straight into remission before...any thoughts? Thank you so much! Jacki

I've been thinking and praying for you guys! We found Each round of chemo does quite a job on the marrow, which can bring slower count recovery, especially the higher dose rounds.
He will recover, it may just take a little longer this time. You're never out of my mind, god speed Julian

Like lea I have been thinking of you and Julian. I was plagued by very slow count recovery during every consolidation to the p oint that my dose was lowered twice. My recovery after induction was very fast. My med team marrowed me between each session to be sure I was still in remission. My lead onc who had specialized in aml for 35 years believe that this showed that my marrow is very very sensitive to the chemo which is a positive.

The fact that this induction is in preparation for sct to me seems les worrisome because he is getting a new marrow. Maybe that does not make sense but I would rather do everything to beat every blast into oblivion.

Thank you all! I can honestly say that it is actually more my husband's concern than my own this time. After reading people's posts on here, I tend to agree with Dave that the count recovery seems to have more to do with the chemo than whether he is in remission. He also had parvovirus before or around the time of relapse, which I wonder if that would slow recovery maybe too. Either way, counts are going up...just slowly. I also agree with you, Julie...obliterate every single blast! Lea, I hope Tony is doing awesome! I am so ready for Julian to put this behind him and be the little boy he deserves to be! We're getting closer everyday!

Julian is in my thoughts and prayers. I agree with Julie get everyone of those blasts. Julian will be a healthy little boy real soon.

like the rest I wonder how you guys are doing. thanks for keeping us updated. Praying for your family every day, you are right he does deserve to be a little boy and do his normal little boy stuff again. and those counts will recover. Praying for a complete cure.
