Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

My sister Jo had her BMB last Friday and we are waiting on results. Please pray that it is good and the doctor says that she is done with treatment. She is doing good but has a lot of bone pain (but she did have to have Neulasta shots to get her white count up because they were taking too long so that probably is the cause of some of the bone pain) and is very tired so that has her a little worried. Her last chemo was in April and we were waiting on her numbers to come back up. Since it was so close to bx time, the doctor let her wait until after the bx to decide if they would stop or keep going. They will make the determination on whether they feel her last one actually indicated MDS or was just due to prolonged chemo treatments. She is very nervous about these results and is so ready to be done with treatment. If the previous results are confirmed MDS on this bx then she will have to continue some type of chemo on a long term basis. I'm not sure how she will handle this news mentally. She is so very tired. She has been doing chemo since January 2014 and is so ready to be done.

Sorry, my son ended up in the hospital and it was discovered that he had diabetes. I have been away for a while dealing with getting him out of the hospital and all of us adjusting to a new lifestyle. We did get her results for her bone marrow. It showed no residual AML and her blasts, which had gone up to 3%, were back to 1%. So all of that was good. However, we won't find out about the MDS situation until she actually sees Dr. Borthakur at MDA on July 8th for complete results of everything. Still hoping for good news on that also.

So sorry to hear about your son's dx. Is it type 1 or 2 diabetes?

Great to hear that Jo's blast count is down, I was not aware that had crept up and that all signs of AML are gone. I'm praying for good news relative to MDS on Friday. Please give is an update. It's that also when jo will learn her treatment plan forward?

It is type 2. Blood sugar still running from about 174 to 200 but that is way better than the 526 he had in the hospital. We had no idea he had diabetes. Jo's chromosome analysis report always say abnormalities were seen that indicate persistent disease (this report has something to do with karyotypes tested). This time it says "the previously reported abnormality is still recovered in the bone marrow indicating residul disease." Her Flow Cytometry report says no residul AML. Her Molecular Diagnostics says no CBFF-MYH11 fusion transcript is detected by quantitative real time RT-PCR. It's confusing to me. We will see what the doc says tomorrow. Hopefully good news.

Well, it looks like more chemo until January for Jo. He is concerned that the chromosome analysis still shows persistent disease. He explained the reports and said on the surface she is clean but when you go all the way to genetics, she's still having disease. He put the possibility of her having MDS problem on the back burner for now because treatment for it would, in her case, be chemo which they will already be doing or transplant. If things don't improve by January, then they may start to discuss transplant She has been doing chemo for 2 1/2 years and still has residual disease. I'm so scared of this thought!

Wow Debbie, I am so sorry to read this about jo. Her situation is so unusual especially considering her favorable sub type, in version 16. But as Tony had experienced, inversion 16 is not always predictable. So the PCR test must be what is showing positive, right?

It's the Cytogenetics report (where they test her chromosomes) that shows the residual disease. PCR test states no residule AML found. That's were he said the surface test (PCR) shows negative but the genetic tests still show some disease. He said if it is going to be wiped out, it should happen in these next 6 months. If that does not happen but it gets no worse, then they may just monitor it really close. If it gets worse, then they will have to start thinking about what other options, including transplant, they may want to try.
