Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
As you all know, I have been so excited about Jack starting asp2215. On Tuesday it was day 28, BMB eval date. Today the study coordinator told him the results - zero blasts! Prior to the study he was over 80% blasts and was on Hydrea. What a miracle from God!
We are not close to even being out of the woods yet- Jack is still febrile almost 24/7 extremely tired, weak and today he had to be on oxygen. He's been coughing so much that he's been nauseous. We are still on the granulocyte infusion therapy for at least another week if not longer. I'm not sure what the next step is but at least we feel that we just have to fight the fungal infection and not the leukemia. The fungus is a toughy since the asp2215 almost kills all the WBC count
I wanted to share the good news and encourage those who can get on the study to try since there's so little info out there regarding results. Thank you for all the support thoughts and prayers.

I'm praising almighty God for answered prayers!!! Jack is a fighter and he will beat this. That is my continued prayer.

In any even -- it will be the infection that kills him if he does not make it -- so observe all of the precautions -- this is what I highly recommend -- no visitors at all except essential care givers -- NO EXCEPTIONS -- germs and bacteria come in on humans -- they mean well but so what. Don't even let him touch anything that has not been sanitized. I carried a paper towel around and used it to touch necessary things. I even put a paper towel on the handle of my IV machine -- you cannot be too careful. Always wear the mask when going out of the room. And just stay away from people. If you hear someone cough run the other direction. At this point it is not the AML or the chemo that is lethal -- it is bacteria and viruses. Sanitize everything to the extent possible. I hope this helps. This has got to be one of the most amazing discoveries that I have heard about in the past five years. Please keep us up on it, and if Jack does come down with something it will just be a matter of putting him into the hands of the rest of the hospital. Hopefully it will be something that they can deal with. The chances of him coming down with something at this point is very high, so if/when it happens, take it in stride. He's extremely weak, tired, on oxygen and can't do things himself now. No one knows how he's doing except for God himself. Every 24 hours there are extreme changes which seem quite negative. His counts are artificially high after the infusion but on the second day the counts fall to zero.

His team thinks there's improvement and so this is why the continuation of the granulovtes after 2 weeks. No change in dosage of asp2215. They at waiting and hoping his own bone marrow will start producing their own cells since all his counts are basically 0 (WBC &anc)
We are thankful on a daily basis as we know this is a very long process.
