Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
Hello all,
Good news to share, my husband Harry, returned to work today. It just been a little over 3 months since his transplant in January, but he is doing really well. Per his doctor he couldn't be doing any better. He now only wants to see him once a month. Not even bloodwork, that part suprised me.
He still faces some challenges like some permanent damage to his eyes, but he can work with the limitation. He was so bored at home, it's will be good for him to get back to "normal" (whatever that means). We know how blessed we are, we faced some dark days where it was though he would not survive.
As a caregiver, my challenge now is to know when to back off and let him handle and when to step in. In the beginning he was not able to make medical decisions and then was so sick at time it was a role that I handled, but know I know he needs to take his life back. I have to learn to step back, hard to do sometimes but I am trying. :)
Things are good, really good, we are just moving forward and taking any "bumps" as we call them as they hit and trying not to worry about the unknown. I think this could be true for anyone dealing with AML or not, you never know where life is going to take you, the best we can do is hang on.

Thank you so much for sharing. As chemo only I required little to no care taking. I did have my hubby stay home one day when I first took vfen anti fungal because some experience severe hallucinations. Otherthan that iI was by myself while hubby went to work and my girls went to school. I felt great throughout understanding that bmt ifs a whole other animal.
I agree with Dave on over achiever. Although I have teleworked for a year full-time I am now in the office full time and just today hit a wall. I have to remind myself what I've been through and give myself the right to be tired without worrying about relapse.

My mum had a BMT in March and also having some eye troubles, did they say what was causing Harry's or was it just a symptom

I'm happy to see that Harry is still doing so incredibly well, and is now already back at work.amazing! It is so inspiring to see your great posts, especially since I know Harry had rough patches along the way, too. It helps all of us, especially those who are currently in the midst of the battle, to see how good things can be again.

Your attitude is perfect and will serve you and Harry well as you continue to distance yourself from AML. The more you both get back to a normal life, the greater that distance becomes. I am thrilled for both of you. To get back to work after 3 months is a true feat. Harry's body will tell him how much he can do at this juncture, and so I actually don't have any worries that he will overdo it.
It feels so good, doesn't it? Congrats!
