Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

My dad (65) is in his second day of 7+3 induction chemotherapy. He has Acute monocytic leukemia (M5).

It has all come so fast. I am very worried...

Does anyone have any thoughts or guidance regarding this subtype?

So sorry to hear of your dad's dx. This support group is not very active these days so you may want to visit the lymphoma leukemia society group at the link below.

Relative to your question about m5. The m categorization of AML ,FAB, has been replaced when the WHO designation. Link provide below. Within a couple of weeks, the cytogenetics testing should be back on your dad's pre treatment bmb. This will place him in a favorable, intermediate or unfavourable category. This will determine treatment path. Chemo only or Stem cell transplant.

Thank you for the response. I will definitely check out those links. I guess what we have to do is wait to see how the chemo has gone and then determine treatment path.

Sorry for the late response. My husband had this subtype and is doing very well now. Chemo only and he has been in remission for over 4 years.
