Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Hi, all -

I am wondering whether anybody can point me to one of Ollie's old threads" "BMT or Chemo, that is the question." We are still in the midst of making peace with this decision - would be grateful for the chance to look at what were some of the experiences that shaped that discussion.

Robin -- I am glad you found it. You will probably see some of my posts on it. Seems like another lifetime. I think I influenced Ollie to try things without a transplant. He relapsed in about a year and then had not choice. I believe it was the GvHD that did him in ... perhaps not a good match or something. He did say he was glad he made the decision and at least he had one good year. But I am concerned that perhaps had he gone with a transplant right off things might have been different. No telling this side of eternity. I will be praying you all make the right decision -- dave

Hi, Dave -

I did see your posts throughout the thread, and found the whole exchange very enlightening and informative. I hope that you are not unduly concerned about the impact of your choice for what Ollie decided was the best course for him. One of the things that I respect and admire about your perspective - and the way you share your story - is that you are as careful as you are to stress that what was most appropriate for you might not work for another. I think that Ollie respected that, too, and is what he had in mind when he advised another member to consider that they were "in their own lifeboat."

Your story is so inspiring - we would have been thrilled to see my Dad have the outcome that you've enjoyed - 3+ years and counting is pretty impressive! Anyway - thanks for being as forthcoming as you are about how you've dealt with this ordeal - it is enormously helpful to have "the voice of experience" participate in these conversations, as so many of us are just pretty shell-shocked to even be here!

Thanks so much -- your words are a great inspiration to me to keep going. You might enjoy some special music for cancer victims that I have put on another web site. I was inspired by a young lady who had breast cancer -- Miriam White Williams who I met on another forum. The song is called "Beyond the Darkness" -- if you go to http://UncleDavesJukebox.com/ and just give it a couple three minutes to download, the song will play automatically. I plan on putting the words of it up on a new thread tomorrow, but its too late now ... I have to make a meeting tomorrow in Montgomery, so I better be going.
