Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Hi all,

Quick update: still in remission from first relapse but getting consolidation next week. SCT scheduled for April 19. Abdominal CT showed enlarged liver and I have some slight pain where liver is. Very mild. Also my liver enzyms are high. My dr feels it's fatty liver from losing weight during chemo (20 lbs in two weeks) or from meds ( voriconizole 500mg a day,). Now have to see hepatologist Friday for clearance for transplant. Anyone else have experience with liver issues?

I do know that for Julian (my son), his liver enzymes would become elevated every time they tried to give him the Voriconazole. They tried lowering the dose, which helped. They eventually just took him off of it altogether. For him it was a prophylactic. Prior to transplant, he always took Fluconazole, which did not seem to bother his liver.

Jeremy's enzymes were raised for a while after chemo. He felt it was from so many cells dying in a short period of time crowding the liver.

In the end everything checked out ok and was back within normal range in a short period of time.

My husband was recently Dx with AML and was also found to have a fatty liver. Our docs don't seem too concerned with this and it is reversible Hopefully you will get the all clear to proceed to your SCT. I think all the meds you have to take are a bit taxing on the liver since the liver does most of the breaking them down. Stay strong and prayers coming your way!!

Fatty liver is common when people lose a great deal of weight or are protein malnourished. That will resolve. Also, the chemo toxins don't do the liver any favors. I think we all have had some elevation of our liver function tests during our treatments and even during recovery. I think my LFTs went up on voriconizole. (I got tired of my doctors calling it Vorie, as if it was a dear friend!). I don't think this is more than a glitch and hope the hepatologist feels the same. Praying for you to move ahead for transplant.

Thanks for all your input! Hepatologist isn't concerned. She feels it's from the rapid weight loss and chemo (right on, Cliff!) however, my ferratin levels are 6400, which is high. Probably due to blood transfusions (sound familiar Julie?). But my transplant dr said we will deal with that later. So, moving into Loyola for three -four weeks on Monday. Ready for transplant!

I am glad that your doctors are comfortable with the liver situation. I certainly am, and have no doubt that you will fly through the transplant. Eat as much as you can in preparation for the final chemo push and keep walking and exercising as much as you can.

Lets get this over with and ON TO GOOD HEALTH!!
