Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
Hi all, I haven't been on in a while, it's been crazy busy going back to work and my husband was back in the hospital last week for his first consolidation treatment. He was released Sunday, so far he is feeling fine, but i know it will take more days for his counts to bottom out. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a smooth as possible process for him. He is doing great, eating well and is on the treadmill every day.
The goal is a BMT, he has a fungal lung infection that needs to clear up first, but we found out today that all 4 of the potential blood marrow donors who submitted their blood work for the more detailed testing are a match for him! I don't know how we will ever be able to thank these donors for being willing to donate and to the donor who ends up being the actual donor I will have to hug them some day and I am not a "hugger". There are awesome and amazing people out there. Lots to be done prior but we have cleared a major hurdle and now one step closer to the BMT phase.
Even when I am not on I keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers. I am always very stoic with the doctors, nurses, family and friends, this in the one place i have found I can express my concerns and fears. Thank you all for your continued support and encouragement.

Hope things continue to progress. My husband also had a lung infection and had to have his BMT delayed. The waiting was hard, but it was definitely the best thing to happen as he got stronger and healthier and we enjoyed the lovely month of October. We will look forward to following your story.

It all sounds good. Fungal lung infections almost seem par for the course. I had one during my first induction which wasn't fun, but it never recurred after it was treated. The best thing is that your husband has 4 donors. I was fortunate to have had 4 as well. I have been "hugging" my donor constantly, since I was given his name 2 years post transplant. He just wrote to me today. He lives in a small town in Germany, and I have been straining to try to use my rudimentary German knowledge to write to him. It is surreal. He told me to stop thanking him for saving my life. I told him that is is rather difficult to refrain. His generosity saved my life.
Lindzee, you should look forward happily to your husband getting his new marrow. It will be a new and wonderful beginning for him. Just hang on.

Wonderful news indeed. I too had a fungal infection in my liver that I had to clear before futher treatment. Thank goodness for all the wonderful Anti-fungals. Th Azole's I call them.
I'm so glad he is still exercising, but just be sure to not overdo it when his numbers drop. It's only for -hopefully- a short time, so just be extra cautious.
Again great news about the matches. People's generosity of spirit makes me happy for this world.

I remember one year ago being in the same boat. Every day brings you one step closer to a cure. Keep fighting. Chin up. Realize you will have some good and some bad days, but eventually the good outweigh. Please continue to keep us all posted on progress. I keep everyone on Daily Strength in my daily prayers . I also continuously pray for our caregivers, who are very special people that provide us with love, physical support and maintain the sprit of hope we all desire.
