Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Hello all....

Can anyone tell me of their experience such as mine.
I am in remission of my AML however BMB shows that FLT3 and the mutations are still present. I am going in for SCT transplant on Saturday. I am very concerned though because I still have the flt3. Dr says her patients have gone into transplant and have had favorable outcomes.
Any stories???

My FLT3 was wiped out by the induction chemo but otherwise our paths are similar. I'll be praying for an easy go of it for you and your complete cure. It is kind of a scary time, but you will be fine. Try to eat as much as you possibly can and walk your laps.

My husband went into remission after his first induction but the FLT3-TKD and NPM1 mutations were still present also. They went ahead and started his first round of consolidation (while waiting to see if any siblings matched). None of his siblings matched so they preceded to give him 4 consolidation rounds of chemo. That was 2 years and 9 months ago...he is still in remission. After the last round of chemo they did a final BM biopsy and it showed 2-3% blast (just like after his induction) but no mutations were present anymore. The doc said this is what consolidation (whether chemo or BMT) was for...too wipe out the rest of those pesky mutated cells. In hind sight my advise to you is not to worry about it.

It is quite complex. If the mutation is in one of your blood cells, that is probably no big deal. If it happens to be in a stem cell (which I doubt) then the stem cell could still be producing them. But if that were the case I would expect to see more than just a few. If they feel like going ahead with the transplant, then for sure I would go ahead with it. If things work out right the vast majority of your blood will be generated by the new stem cells, and the mutations will be a thing of the past. We will all be praying that this will be the case. It sounds like your doctor knows what she is doing. Please keep us up on things as they develop -- daveB

..and able to go onto a BMT, with hope of a cure. I'm now 2 1/2 years post transplant for FLT3 AML, so keep strong and keep fighting. I know it must all seem so scary, but we are all here for you and hope you sail through it! Hugs and love xxx
