Julian is experiencing a lot of very uncomfortable symptoms here in the past couple of days. Everything began on day +5. He had a seizure and spent a night in the PICU. They believe that the seizure was actually from a fever spike. Thank goodness, he has not had any additional seizures. He does remain febrile, however. The fevers are sometimes controlled with Tylenol, sometimes not so much. They have been as high as 104 and 105, but nothing has shown up as far as growth on cultures, which is a blessing. He has had fluid retention, which has, at times affected his oxygenation. He got some Lasix today, which helped a great deal. He also has a rash that I noticed on the morning of day +7. We were told today that his symptoms are most likely due to engraftment syndrome. Mostly, they just try to control the symptoms. At this point, no steroids have been needed, but that may be neccessary in the next few days. I guess that this can last a week or two. The main other issue at this time is mouth sores. They have finally gotten to the point that they are causing a great deal of pain for him at times. He does have magic mouthwash--we started it today. He also has been able to drink a little milk, which has helped to ease the pain a bit. I am really hoping that Julian gets over the hump soon! The one good thing about engraftment syndrome is that it means he is engrafting! That is wonderful news, and I hope those cells start healing him quickly!
