Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Wanted to pass along some positive news. My husband had a checkup Tuesday and his blood counts look amazing. Those pesky platelets like to bounce around a little but they were almost 200. All other blood counts were normal and looked great too. So even more than a year after treatment is over those platelets can still climb up. It was amazing too see the improvement in his blood counts from a year ago. The best part is we don't have to go back to the doc until the end on May. We are heading off on a cruise tomorrow so everyone kiss your loved ones and have some fun this weekend too! Hang in there everyone :)

Julie -- thanks for the good news. I had a blood review last Wednesday and it was all positive. 200 for platelets is in the normal range (150-400). Absolutely nothing to worry about -- I can attest to that. At two years my platelets bottomed out at 86 ... my new normal? No, they have gone up every six months 98, 110, 116, 137 -- I never worried about them -- onc said just don't run with scissors. Everything else was good as well, so after 4 years and 2 months, maybe I am in it for the long term. They stop counting after five years, but I won't. I plan on being here for another 20 years -- I would still only be 90. So congratulations -- we all have taken some blows recently, but we all have much to be thankful for as well. Let us not forget to give thanks to the One from whom we receive all good gifts. -- dave
