Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Thought I would never get to this point but I am finally back home. The whole bmt experience has humbled me tremendously. I totally underestimated the procedure. Day 100 results are leukemia free and 100 percent donor.

I don't post alot but Vist everyday. You guys have always given me hope and inspiration and I thank you for that.

Doctors say my chance of relapse is relatively low (20 to 25%) and should drop to about 11% after a year. Never heard this before but I'll take it. Again thank you all on this site and I'll look straight ahead at the long road ahead.

So happy to see your 100 day post with such great results. How was the sct process? Were you in the hospital for all of that time or near the hospital?

Julie,
I was only in the hospital for four days. Vandy does most of their stuff as outpatient as long as there are no fevers or complications. I did however have to stay in Nashville for 90 days. That was hard for my wife and I. Nashville is about 150 miles from Louisville.

You must have pretty well if you only had four days in the hospital. Did you need 24/7 care during the 100 days. Many are curious about that. How did you feel overall?

My wife was my caregiver and I had clinic everyday for the first 30 days. After that it went to two times a week for 30 days then once a week. I had one or two blood transfusions and that was it. My counts went up on their own. Platelets shot up to around 380 but dropped over several weeks then finally stablized at around 180. Wbc is 6.3 and anc is around 4.5. Once I had the stem cells there really was no fever so I didn't have to go back in the hospital. Appetite was horrible and I felt crummy but started to bounce back around day 60.

So sorry for all the questions. Never did I imagine my inversion 16 brother having to go through this. When we get to the two year mark, we think we safe. You and I talked so many times about having this beat beat. Well now you certainly have it beat once and for all. Your counts are awesome! ! Almighty God had a purpose for you and part off that is helping others courageously face relapse and sct. You faced thus dead on and are an inspiration to me. Because of you, I fear less. Thank you so much for keeping us updated. You have never left my family's daily prayers. The only statistic that matters is 0% or 100%. You are 100% cured!!!!

Yes, you can look at it this way -- unlike normal people AML survivor will live one more extra day for every day they survive -- well, to a point. But the probability of a relapse goes down, so if you make it three years you are just about there -- extremely small number of people relapse between year 3 and 5 and they stop counting after that -- since AML is generally an old folks thing the chances of us succumbing to other things is higher than AML after 5 years. I am a 5.5 year survivor, AML/MDS, chemo only, and am approaching 72. You are in the survivors club -- welcome aboard! -- daveB
