Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

I have to have cataract surgery on both eyes, 2 years post transplant. My eyesight went bad very quickly, I was afraid I was going blind. My doctor tells me this is a very common side effect of the transplant. Like 70% of their patients common. Curious if anyone else has went through this or been told this?

Granted, I'm only Day +88, but as of yet, I haven't noticed any side effects of the transplant. My lung function was tested because of the Busulfan, but that looks good for the time being.

I'm sorry Dave, that doesn't sound fun at all. Tony hasn't had any issue w vision, but has dry eyes every now and then

Apparently cataracts can occur. Don't worry as cataract surgeries are very simple now and extremely successful with limited side effects. The type of lens implants you choose can affect the cost of the surgery though. A huge percentage of patients are fine after surgery.

Dave,

Did you have total body radiation as part of your conditioning regimen? I was told that many people who get TBI get cataracts. I just had my eyes examined yesterday and do not have cataracts at this point. My eyes tend to be very dry, like Tony's, but then again they were dry to begin with. Cataract surgery will restore your vision and is an easy procedure to go through.

Cliff, no radiation at all for me just the chemo. The good thing is I will be able to see 20/20 again. Just a little speed bump along the way! Thanks everyone.

Great attitude Dave. Cataract surgery is absolutely nothing and yes, you will again see great. It is worth the annoyance!
