Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

My dad is 63 and has relapsed AML, scheduled for a BMT in the next month. His spirits are somewhat down although faith high. I am requesting positive stories of transplant, successes whether large or small, any insights to encourage, helpful hints or learned from experience. I live in Virginia, he and mom with sister in Florida, treament in Alabama so when I visit it's just for few weeks at a time. Thank you in advance.

So sorry that you had to join us. There are many positive SCT stories here specifically under transplant team 2016, 2015, etc. Also, I recommend posting on the lymphoma leukemia society support group for SCT, link provided below.

My son had his bmt actually a sct in August 2014 and not only is he doing well he and his wife are expecting a surprise baby girl next month.

There is also a facebook group for stem cell transplant patients and family and I have found it to be the most active.

Hi, I have heard many successful transplant cases after relapse. May I ask what your dad's cytogenetic profile was, that they did not do a transplant right away? My husband had a favorable risk category and received chemotherapy alone, and is doing well though something has come up and I'm wondering whether to be prepared for transplant as possible next step.

I had a transplant on 12/27/2013 exactly 6 months after diagnosis. I haven't been on here much, I had to re-join after they changed the format here. My brother was my donor and the results have been very good. I was flt3 positive and was in the high risk category. 3.5 years later and I am in probably the best shape of my life, I am getting ready to do a 100 mile mountain bike race in June. People do survive and thrive after transplant, I am living proof. I will be praying for you and your husband.

My sister had BMT from the bone marrow registry. It has been 8 years now. My brother and I were not adequate to donate, but her life has been saved by someone out there. I keep my fingers crossed that I get to give someone such a gift! Our family is a bit fun loving, so we celebrate her original birthday as well as her BMT birthday. She deserves two!

We conspire on all the crimes she could commit with her new blood DNA, though she is a bit too straight and narrow to begin suspecting her. She has had a bit of trouble with GVHD, but continues to live on her own, going to work every day. The whole affair has given us all such an appreciation for little things like doing the dishes and washing the car, knowing that every new day really is a gift.
