Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Hi everyone ! Long time being away but I hope u all are doing great.

I have a friend with AML who doesnt speak english, and since I told him about this site, he asked me to make a question: What benefits are to have a sibling donor 100% compatible, vrs a non related donor 100% compatible?

Hi Ana, nice to see you back!

This is how I understand it, and others may chime in to add things or correct me:
Because you share the same parents, a 10/10 matched sibling donor may likely have additional tissue matches aside from those 10 HLA that they measure. If so, theoretically, it may reduce symptoms of GVHD.

Ana -- welcome back -- it is great to hear from you, and we all hope you are doing well. I have heard answers both ways and am not confident to give an answer to your question. Hopefully some others who have been thru transplants will know. I had a 10-10 match with my brother but did not do a transplant because of age mainly. We are all praying for you and your friend -- dave
