Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Today I went with my family to celebrate the 2 years since diagnosis. I was diagnosed August 25, 2011, hospitalized August 26 and chemo started August 28th. Two years ago I was hooked to the 7+3 24-hours chemo, dealing with the shock, the fear, the physical, emotional pain, my children, parents, siblings, not knowing anything yet, including if I would live or die. I feel like only now I am starting to grasp what I have (and we as a family have) gone through.
The question came up as to when we should celebrate. It seems strange to go out on the day of diagnosis. But I feel it's symbolic to be able to feel well and be here and together on that day.
Then there's remission (early October. for me there's no one specific date, since there was doubt and disagreement between the doctors about whether I was in remission), and there's end of all treatment (January, but I feel this was so loaded and tough and scary).
What do you celebrate?
Here's to many celebrations.
Abby
Congrats. My two year diagnosis anniversary was on March 28. It is also my parents' wedding anniversary and so I don't want to celebrate AML on that day. Sept 8 is my 2 year post transplant birthday. I don't know how I will be celebrating, other than to say that it will be with my wife, and wine will be involved. I feel terrifiic and will feel even more terrific if my follow-up bone marrow on Oct 1 is good (and my counts). Then I will do the same tarantella that I did for Andrea and Eddie for their respective transplants, and I promised myself that I would sashay down the isles at Old Navy (a la Eddie) to celebrate. I won't care who is watching and how bizarre I will appear.
Ana...ditto Dave's comments. You are a champ and thank God that, under the financial circumstances relating to transplant in your country that you have been cured medically. BRAVO.

I was diagnosed June 29 2011. I celebrated on my one year diagnosis by taking a party of 25 ( my family and closest friends out to dinner) and celebrated my 2 years by flying to Greece with my father and my sister.
I choose to celebrate the day of diagnosis for 2 reason
(1) Finding out I had AML saved my life and enabled me to get treatment quickly which improves your chances of survival.
(2) my day of diagnosis was filled with fear, uncertainty and tears. From now on I want that day to be filled with laughter, food and wine.
