Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.
Hello all,
My husband, Harry, passed the 6 month post bmt mark about two weeks ago and we met with his doctor earlier this week. His doctor couldn't be more pleased, his blood work is all normal, he weight is back to normal, they started his first series of shots while we were there, so my guess is every time we go now he will probably be getting more. I did ask his doctor if he should get a flu shot and his response was a resounding YES. So as soon as flu shots are available, the entire family will be getting them, not taking any chances. What a difference a year makes, he was diagnosed on 7/26/13, this time last year we were not sure if he was going to survive due to the AML and the brain bleed, but now we are blessed that he is doing so well, back to work and feeling more like his old self (he still tires more easily than he did pre-diagnosis). We both know the future is uncertain, there is always the possiblity of relapse or complications, but even without AML the future is always uncertain, so we are just doing our best to live our lives and have some fun.
The cool news- Be the Match contacted our oldest son, he is a match for a man with leukemia in need of a transplant, he provided the final stage blood work a few days ago and is now just waiting to find out if he will be selected to be the donor. We don't know if this man has other matches or if my son is the only one. He really wants to be selected, we all think it would be so awesome if he could "pay it forward" for his dad.
Sending prayers and positive energy to all of you and please join me in praying/sending good thoughts to this man who needs a transplant, we all know what he and his family are going through as they wait for a confirmed match.
