Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

Vince just had his labs done and the numbers look great (platelets are 197!!!!). I can't believe the numbers keep improving this long after treatment. The only off number is the mpv (its a little low still). We were told it is very common after high doses of chemo. So its been 3 years 6 months since diagnoses M5 npm1+ FLT3-TKD+. One induction and 4 rounds of consolidation. The doctor now says his risk of relapse will remain the same for the rest of his life. I guess we have made it past the highest chance of relapse time frame. He told us the biggest risk now was related to the treatment itself (treatment related mds and aml). But that risk is pretty small. I check on here for updates weekly and keep you all in my prayers!

The longer Vince goes, the better. I don't agree that the risk of relapse remains the same. From the little I have read, the risk is exceedingly low after 2 years and plateaus by 5 for sure. Congrats to both of you.

The doctor had just told us of a patient of his who had been in remission for 8 years and just relapsed. Then I think he realized that was not what we wanted to hear and told us his risk of relapse has now plateaued. I think sometimes doctors start talking to us like we are one of their colleagues and not their patient. I'll go on what you say though and wait for the 5 years before we consider his risk stabilized. Thanks for the info!

So awesome to see such and outstanding update on Vince, Julie! !!

Vince is about six months ahead of me paving the path to cure. At my visit this month, my ONC brought out a chart that showed relapse rates. She explained at three years post chemo relapse goes to less than 5%. I'll take those numbers.

Both Vince and I have been taken care of so well by the US Air Force. Our experience exemplifies the Wingman concept. Now we've been blessed by our great health since AML. I'M PRAISING GOD for the both of us!!!

Good to see another success story, He has beat AML, I believe that is the attitude to take and it is what I live 2 years post transplant. There is no reason to think otherwise, worrying about it surely will not prevent relapse (easier said then done I know, and I think it is worse for the caregiver than the patient). Being physically fit to be able to tolerate the treatments if it does come back is important. The rest is in the lords hands.

Great news and a great post! All you guys that have been through it all and are going strong are an inspiration and great to have on this site. It gives the ones going through it now strength to know that it can be beaten and the will to hang on through all the "stuff" they have to go through. Thanks again for the great post!

I have almost the same timeframe 3 yrs and 3 months. I stopped asking questions about AML from my M.D. almost 2 yrs ago. It is what it is. Congrats.
