Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) Support Group
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), also known as acute myeloid leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells. Patients with AML usually present with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding, infection, prompting medical attention. An abnormal blood test reading will then result in further testing in a hospital with a hematologist to determine AML.

These days I am reaching 1 year and 4 months after ending chemo. Some where I heard about 2 years is like a goal. Someone can explain what kind of goal.
I am also 1 year and 9 months after acheiving complete remission. My onco says after 3 years, the worst is over, so.... I still have a long way to go. I still keep my port in my chest and clean it up avery month.
Just wanted to share my happiness and also ask about 2 years (?)

Congrats on your 1 year, 4 month anniversary. The 'two' year thing.....Apparently, they will now begin using the word cure of you hit two years in complete remission. One of my docs said to me once as I rejoiced, I'm cured, said, hey slow down, we don't use that word until we hit the two year mark. So, that is likely the consensus, though I also hear 5 years from some people. Who knows, to me, a one day mark means success.

So there are a few aspects.
First off - since when do we count? Most research papers count since time of diagnosis.
My doctor counts since first remission. (I'll be 2 years in early October)
My doctor also said a few things (I ask a lot of questions...and read quite a bit as well)
- My sub-type - NPM1 positive, tends to relapse in the 1st year. Statistics are clear, it's about 50% in year 1, 10% in year 2 and negligable after. But that's for my particular cytogenetics.
- He sees 2 years as quite random and will not consider me cured until it's the 5 year mark, since he claims to have seen cases of late relapse (how disappointing...). I see your doc says 3 years....I'll take that! :)
I think you and I reached remission at about the same time :)

I can honestly say that I now feel cured and am ready both in mind and body to resume life and leave AML behind me.
Whilst AML was not a welcome intruder into my life, it did teach me many things. I think the biggest lesson I learnt is not to be so judgemental. I am now more accepting of the different decisions people choose to make in their life ,whilst many times they are not the choices I would have made I now accept and respect them as their choices. I have grown as a individual and believe this has allowed me to form much closer and genuine relationships.

IM sooooo happy to hear about this ! These days are being hard for me....I was asked to resign from my job due to "health reasons" ! So...this sounds like music to my ears....
And no.... I cant sue my employer.... we are in the middle of the jungle down here. But I dont need to ! All I need is feeling happy for this second life I love so much... I love it so much as you all understand well. Im planning a trip, dont know where, but I will ! Soooo happy !
Julie, keep up, you will be out of this soon. Abby, yes, I'll be 2 years in november. Quite close.
