NHS trust hit with huge damages bill for failing to spot growth abnormality

An aspiring actress has been awarded 1.228million after an undiagnosed tumour left her feeling like a freak.

Judge Stuart Baker said Kate Woodward's life had 'undoubtedly been severely affected' by her condition
Kate Woodward, 20, said the growth abnormality which caused her to shoot up to 1.96m (6ft 5in) had ruined her career hopes and left her with a raft of medical problems.

The NHS trust which failed to spot the issue with her pituitary gland for four years admitted clinical negligence but had argued for an award nearer the 700,000 mark.

However, Judge Stuart Baker awarded her almost double that amount at the High Court in London.

He said: The claimants life has undoubtedly been severely affected to a very great extent and will always be very different from what she might otherwise reasonably have expected to look forward to. That will result in a substantial award.

Judge Baker went on to say that, although Miss Woodward still had plenty going for her, she will always have to diet and exercise to keep her weight from ballooning and will have to rely on fertility treatment to fulfil her dream of having children.

Miss Woodward, of Sidmouth in Devon, had to endure verbal bullying from her peers and still needs regular injections after St Jamess University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmarys oversight.

After giving up on her acting dream, she is studying for an honours degree in screenwriting and producing.

my thoughts on reading this..I was annoyed when I was first diagnosed that nobody listened to me..but in the defence of the medical profession my symptoms could mimic other things..now it saying shes 20 and alot of people are taller these days..I am glad that theres more awareness and people who go to a doctors it should be listened to but what now gets me is money taken from the hospital that amount as its saying she is continueing to work is that the more money thats taken... results in maybe hospitals will not be able to offer treatments like mri or drugs to others..so Im mixed on this story

Well I for one am very pleased for her, 4 years not knowing what is wrong with you forever at doctors and hospitals, going to every department for diagnosis, and never getting to the endocrine unit till things have got so bad. So much money wasted going down the Wong track, this is not something new, this happens to nearly every one of us, thats where the money is getting wasted, these doctors need to have more refresher courses, GPs. Espelcially I know of someone that was doing this for 8 years in so many different hospitals, you can imagine what she was labelled, like so many others, I sued, we lost, but it has made my hos and doc move upa gear, so every little helps, look at the poor lad that died last week in HOSPITAL with diabestes insipidus, he'd been through pit tumour surgery, and was having a hip replacement, terrible story he can't sue. Shame on them. I hope his young lady goes on and has a healthy life, she won't have to worry too much about being off sick with no pay, mortgage etc, like a lot of us on here, good luck to her on her journey, she is so young and still has a road to walk.

Im more angry at the government..that hospitals are underfunded..doctors just get ten mins to see someone..yes theres some medical professionals who are terrible and its just a job but some do try..I seen in whilst working in care..the staff were amazing fighting bugs running around working so hard long hours on minimum wage..same as with some hospitals
