Almost two years ago, I lost my parents. My sister, who lives 10 minutes away from me, came together at that time, to get through it. Sort of. I was, because her husband is very ill, not expected to get better, was in charge of their affairs. I did everything; that endless calls, the paperwork, I did it because I'd agreed to do it.
I had put some differences with my sister aside at the my parents were ill. The problems were of a financial nature. On the surface at least. After I closed the trust and settled everything I thought, at least she won't have to be concerned about money anymore. My parents left us very comfortably. I made the assumption that she would finally make good on a debt she owed me. I was wrong.
Her opinion now was that since I had inherited too, I should forget about the money she owed me. That she would in my position. I wanted to tell her that she would never ever be in my position because the first thing I would have done when I had the money was to write her a check for it and thank her for helping me out when
I was in dire financial straits. I felt shocked and insulted by it.
So then, I learn earlier this year, on Facebook mind you, she was off to the east coast to visit a cousin and in laws. And afterwards, also on Facebook, she is seriously thinking of moving back there. Not a word to me. Recently, she had wanted to change the deed on the property we own together and I told her as neutrally as possible, I wanted to check with an attorney before I signed anything.
Her come back was, forget it, she was selling up, moving back east and then I could have my money and we'd both live "happily every after". What the F%&*?!!! So I see again this morning she is off to the east, house hunting. I signed the papers to sell the property last week. I am so angry as her I don't even want to talk to her.
While I can certainly understand why she wants to move closer to her husband's family with him so ill, I don't get why she felt the need to use that information as a club because I won't give her what she wants. Why so nasty about it? As I think back though, it has always been that way. She doesn't get what she wants and I am an awful person.
I'd like to be blase about it, but I am hurt to the core. She is all I have of my immediate family and I am very hurt that it doesn't seem to matter to her. I am comforted though that my parents saw up come together at the end, typically, me going along to get along. I feel so very sad about it though. I know I am looking back on our relationship with rose colored glasses. Just another loss. And, nice timing on her part.

Honey you have been thru So Much as It is... And there are times in our Lives we have to know when to cut our losses... I Know for me I couldn't Sleep If I OWED Anyone Money... Let alone Ask them to "Wave My Fee" Because I had come in to a couple dollars NOW!
Sadly... i Think My Sister & Your's Should hook up... They sound ALOT in the Same... Mine is Currently not Speaking to my Grandma (87) Because a Long Time ago Gram Helped her Out, and when Gram Fell on hard times she wrote my sisiter a Letter (They lived on Oppisite Coast) and ask he to repay what she had promised... My Sisters Response was... "WELL... Get the Money From Your Worthless Son.. Because HE OWES ME!!! " (Our Father to which she did not speak to Either and when he died and I just found out... Her Response was... A Shrug Of her Shoulders... I wanted to LEVEL Her... Thank GOD my Mom was Standing there or she would have got it....
I have no Problem Helpin people out, I Believe Also tho... What Goes Around, Comes Around and I hope I'm Not Standing to Close when it does... She will have to live her life knowing that she was that selfish... And I Just pray that someday her Daughter doesn't do to her what she has done to EVERYONE on my Fathers side of the Familyl.... Sickens me to know she can be that Selfish and Self Serving...
So Now... She just Knows not to Bash them in my Presents... Your Sister Too will see what she is missing in knowing or getting to know her only sister... If she don't... Sorry to Say, I Don't know her, But I know that she is missing out on Knowing a Very Kind, Caring, Compassionate, Sweet, Beautiful Lady... And well if she is Casting you Off, I Would be Proud to adopt you In Mine :) We Can Detach from them and Just Enjoy Our Journeys together...
Chin Up Ms. M... You are in my Thoughts & Prayers and if you are ever lacking a Sister... you Just Look me Up :) This too Shall Pass... I will Continue to Pray that you make it thru these Trying Times with Nothing Short of "Ease, Balance & Grace :0)
Love 1 Ness :)
You have been through a wringer the last couple of years and at times like that all I want is some peace and quiet....
John Bradshaw did a series on shame years ago that really hit home with me. He was talking about being needy.... needy in a healthy way. He said that we need to feel loved and respected and accepted for who we are. And more times then not, when we needed those needs is when we were shamed.
When I needed to feel loved and accepted by my parents, I was told that I was selfish. So after awhile I got confused on what I really needed and felt guilt for needing anything from anybody.
One statement in that series that really hit home and he paused halfway through it, to really let it sink in. He said, "That when we were our neediest is when we were shamed the most."
His point was that there comes a time where we need to walk away from toxic relationships, that we will never get what we need from some relationships.... that one statement has always stayed with me... In a relationship, friendship, whatever you want to call it, if my basic human needs of being validated and accepted, then I need to walk away...
I am sorry that you are going through this, some people just never "get it" and they never will.
I do agree that you loaned her money in good faith and no matter what the inheritance was she still owes you the money.
On a side note, When my dad died he left an ample amount of money for his four sons. And at that time I was very heavy into alcohol and drugs and had lied my way into loads of money from my three brothers... though we all received a load of money... the first thing I did was pay them all back...
You are entitled to that money... you may never get it.... but it is yours.
I admire your strength and courage for everything you have accomplished these past two years... you made your parents very proud of everything you have done....
In my thoughts and prayers,
Dave
I don't know what to say - it really is upsetting how some people behave. Heavens above.
Like Dave said - and I have had to come to terms with this - some people will just never get it.
I am really sorry this happened to you. Goodness me - I will never understand some people.
Love always
Karen xx
Wow... I can so understand your pain and frustration. I would be much like you... "hurt to the core." Because, shouldn't we, above all else, be able to love, trust and connect with siblings who were there, that understand? It seems to me you've been betrayed by someone you should have a deep connection with - especially given there is just the two of you? Money has a tendency to undermine and "color" morals and values.
You know Hobbit - I keep telling my husband... it's always how "you handle things that matters." In spite of the pain, the hurt, the betrayal, the loss - you have handled yourself with honesty, integrity, flexibility and class. Seems to me that your sister is the one losing out - on your love, your respect, your devotion, your care. Your share just reinforces, for me, the point of developing "family of choice."
M, I send you BIG HUGS and love... I am so sorry for your "extended" loss. I can relate to how lonely this must feel for you.
