The softer side of growing up in a dysfunctional home... a sanctuary to feel home with friends and never alone.

One of the common traits of an Adult Child is growing up with a pervasive sense of emptiness. The inconsistency in the family environment and its resulting loss of trust leaves one feeling empty. When the emptiness becomes so great, and the pain of that emptiness becomes unbearable, we tend to reach for whatever comes along to fill it. That’s due in part because, as another result of our dysfunctional childhood, we had come to believe that any fulfillment was fleeting and transient, and so scarcity becomes a framework of thinking. In short, we learned to settle.
Oh, how we settled. We settled for people who were toxic to us, but in our minds it was better than nothing. We settled for treatment that a healthy person would not tolerate for a minute, yet we tolerated mistreatment for years, if not decades. We settle for drugs, alcohol, food and/or sex, or maybe we go to the other extreme and become health nuts, living in the gym and spending money we don’t have on “miracle” foods, vitamins and treatments. We settle for the nonsense spouted by the guru of the week. We work too long and too hard, or we can’t keep a job. We live in isolation, or we surround ourselves with people constantly because we can’t stand to be alone with our own thoughts.
We try and try to fill the emptiness, but nothing seems to work...or to last.
Then a miracle happens: we stumble into recovery. We find a community of people who are wounded in ways similar to us, yet are committed to working on healing, and we are welcomed unconditionally. We begin to get to know our Higher Power and come to understand that this Power wishes us to be made whole. We learn of the Twelve Steps as a path to that coveted healing and wholeness. For many of us, for the first time ever, we begin to put good things into that emptiness.
As I move forward in my own recovery, I'm getting an increasing appreciation for the importance of what I choose to put into my mind. I am cutting way back on my consumption of news media. I've begun to avoid websites and blogs that feature topics that tend to just make me mad, instead preferring to find recovery-themed or uplifting sites for my surfing enjoyment. And in the big picture, I'm trying to approach this as an act of self-care, not a "problem that needs to be corrected."
Here's to giving ourselves Good Things!

For me it is absolutely self-care. Far too often I have been very distressed by something I have seen on the news. There is also the drip drip effect that having it on constantly in the background can have.
I am not weak or weird, I am simply trying to feed my mind healthy uplifting thoughts. I can absorb things like a sponge so it is right and proper that I take care of myself in this area.
Some folks can watch stuff and it is forgotten within a moment. I can be distressed for going into days.
Thank you (((A1))) for giving me the permission to continue !!!!! (((hugs))) Karen
Lately I have been "stuck" on the Charlie Sheen meltdown. I'm fascinated with it because if not for the Grace of God that easily could have been me.
I think the thing for me is that there was a time that I needed to know everything just so I didn't look or feel dumb. Anymore, I find that its OK if someone else wants to educate me.... I don't know it all and it is very freeing to be that way...
Sorry Dave! It's just not fair is it ????Coming here and being teased !!!!!!!
Big hugs to you and WELL DONE once again on your studies.
Am still wading through treacle with mine! *groan*
Er!!! Gratitude Karen!!!!!! ................er.........*groan* Argh!
WOW.. yep... I Know all about 97% of your Share... I to have had the Uncontrollable desire (Sadly enough) to "Settle" for almost EVERYTHING my 1st 30 yrs in life.... Finding this Program a Truly helped me Thrive instead of Survive...
Before I got here, I could not STAND Silence... It was Like a Pearcing Pain that Ran thru my body when I was "Alone" or Left in "Silence"... So I would Seek Out Anyone that would Fill that Void... Now since Program, and Since I Quit Drinking I have Lost 97% of my "So Called" Friends, and I have to say that the other 3% are HERE...lol...
I Remember when I 1st Got into the program the (1) Thing that Bugged me the Most, was the Silence in the meetings after someone shared & you are waiting on someone else to pick up the ball to share... If It was Quiet for longer then 30 seconds, I was Dancing in my Seat, and 90% of the time, I would Share just to Break the Silence...lol...
NOW... I Embrace it, It is one time I Don't HAVE to Say 0r Do Anything, I still have uneasy moments of "Lonelyness" but I Do Believe it is a "Mind of Matter" kind of thing... Like today it is Rainy & Ugly out, No Sun, and I am Alone in my Office so this would be My Lonely day... But Before I would have to go get stirred into someone elses drama... Now... I just hang out with HP and THANK HIM For the SILENCE :0)
Fun how things Turn out isn't it :^) I Needed this This Morning, so Thanks a Bunch for Sharing... Glad your Here ...
Hugs & Prayers ...
