I'm 27 and single (no girlfriend) and I would like to stay single so I have more time and energy for spiritual practice. For the past five years I deliberately stayed single and did not seek a girlfriend so I could focus on my spiritual practice and I feel I have made some good spiritual progress doing so. However, I'm now 27 and approaching 30, and people around me find it strange that I don't have a girlfriend yet. If possible, I would like to stay single for the rest of my life so I can conserve my energy for spiritual practice. But pressure from family, friends and colleagues really get in the way. Has anyone successfully experimented celibacy in their 20's and 30's? How are you able to handle pressure from society to date, get into sexual relationship etc. ?
I have been celibate since 1998 and I have had my share of sly comments and innuendoes to which I pay no mind.
I simply do not care what others tell me about how to live my life. Honestly, I think that I definitely happier alone. I was miserable in a relationship, never had time to myself, had to deal with what someone else wanted for me and in the end it was all a waste of time
Not to mention that very few know how to have a healthy relationship, I decided it was best to skip it. It was even easier after I realized that sex was an option not a need. My life has never been better.
When people ask me why am I still single, I tell them I am too neurotic for words and I am doing society a favor by not breeding. They usually leave me alone after that.
