In early days when I went to meetings I was not sure if I was or was not an alcoholic. I used to listen to speakers who would get up and say hi I am ... and I am an alcoholic. They proceeded to speak about losing jobs. marriages, crashing cars, going to jail/institutions etc etc. For me I had not had any of these things happen so no wonder I was confused if I was or was not.
Even remember after one share a bloke came up to me and said you aren't an alcoholic, I have spilt more then you drank.
I was talking about this issue with a person who was to become my sponsor some time later and they said to me "if you want this program to work then you need to believe in it". They told me to read page 21 and pointed out the paragraph about the real alcoholic. Again I was reminded about the belief and that if I believed in the BB then I believed in that simple statement. When I put alcohol in I can not control how much I drink, this is what make me an alcoholic; nothing more, nothing less.
I have since come to understand that the rest of the stuff ie loss of cars, crashes, institutions etc etc are just the drama of drinking and not what makes me an alcoholic.
Oh and as some one pointed out to me the bloke with the comment has told me how much he spilt but not how much he drank!!

I see the description of the Alcoholic being a way of helping someone to understand their condition, that's what it was for me. Many of us have some denial to cut through and then some. I sometimes think I hear it being used as a kind of ID badge of pride, almost a way of feeling special and different from one's fellow. Spiritual Pride - they warned me about that one!
