Twice in my life I have been relieved of the obsession to drink. The first time was in 1982 when I surrendered and realized that I was powerless over alcohol and decided to go to AA. That was after two years of trying and just not being able to do it. That night I lay in a street and asked God for help. That I couldn't go on living the way I was. I just realized tonight that it was the spiritual experience necessary to lift the obsession. Not until I took a drink 19+ years later did the obsession return. When I took that drink, I hadn't been obsessing about it. Not struggling. I was happy in fact. BUT... once I picked up that first drink after all those years... BAM! It all came back.
Fast forward nine years later. After several failed attempts to stop again, one evening I'd had enough. No night different than any other night as far as my drinking was concerned. No consequences. Just sitting in my room alone. Despair. Spiritually bankrupt. Emotional mess. Stuck, stuck, stuck! Called an old AA friend and dumped and dumped and dumped all my stuff. The obsession was lifted from that day on. Another spiritual experience in my eyes.
Nice! God's bestowed his grace upon me yet again. This is truly a gift and I will continue to treat it as such. I DO feel I have been rocketed into that fourth dimension that Bill talks about in the BB.
For today life is grand. And today is all I have.
Thanks for letting me share. ;-)
