"Ones-own self is well hidden from one"s own self" a renowned philosopher once wrote. " Of all the mines of treasure , one's own is the last to be dug up." The twelve steps have enabled me to unearth my "own self, the one that for so long was buried beneath my desperate for approval from others. Thanks to The program and my H/P, I've begun acquiring a true sense of self and a comfortable sense of confidence. No longer do I have to react chameleon like , changing my coloration from one moment to the next. fruitlessly trying to be all things to all people. Do I strive at times , to be true to myself?

I have definitely found that the program and HP were the true beginning of finding myself. The process continues as I walk my spiritual path and hopefully grow as I go along. It has also continued through therapy which I needed for some aspects of who I am coming to be that were not fully covered by the program.

I am reading The Power Of Now at the moment and am taken by his descriptions of connecting to our true being when we can live in the present and identify less with our thoughts and emotions and more with who we really are.

I used to say this all the time 'I'm just being true to myself', but I was just using that statement to justify my disrespectful behaviour. I could say what I pleased because it was being 'true to myself', standing by what I believed. But when I dug below those layers, there was so much more beneath.

Another me down there, that had a heart. Being true to myself is feeling in my heart what I believe is right. Being true to myself isn't needing to be like anyone else or try to reach their or my unrealistic expectations. I strive to be, sometimes I need to listen to my heart and not my head so much. Interesting reflection. :}

Ahh yes Chameleon is me. I have found that through out my life, I have been marvelous at reading people, and able to fit into almost any situation: Be it prison, an intellectual conversation among scholars, a bar, or a church, and everywhere in between. My true self only hidden for those few who really knew me. "A game face" I guess you would say. I also don't like confrontations or arguments. If I disagree with someone, I just make a mental note to stay clear of that person.
I realize that in order for me to be truly of Service in AA and in to those put in my path, I must find a balance. I am working the steps currently to figure out "who I am" and that means the good and the bad. I pray to my HP to peel the scales from my eyes, so that I am aware of the character defects that stand in the way. Again, I am a work in progress.
