A Life Skills Group Community Group
All are welcome to join our group. We're here to share advice, encouragement, and ideas on how to build better lives for ourselves. We can discuss all aspects of daily living, along with anything else that’s on your mind. Each of us knows a little, and together, we know a lot that can help us each to reach higher and go further in life. There's such a lot...

I left employment to care for a sick relative who is now deceased, and wish to return to working.
But honestly....all periods of not working are looked down on.
If you're trying to get into the workforce when you haven't been...it's probably best to start with a job that employers are always looking for new workers for. And then it's critical to have extremely good attendance and be a really hard worker. Because you will need a good reference for the next job...
Patt22, you're right, if a person has been out of work for a lengthy period of time, the fastest way back into the workforce would be to take a job in a company that is always looking for new workers. Some jobs that might fit into that category would include customer service representatives, call center operators, retail store cashiers, retail store stock clerks, day laborers, temporary placement agency workers, delivery drivers, assembly line workers, house cleaners, dishwasher/table bussers, waiters and waitresses, movers, and so forth. Then, once you have that first job that gets you back into the world of work, you can begin the search for something better.
Here's another reason someone might give for termination of past employment or a period of lengthy unemployment: I was grossly overweight and endured teasing, which is why I left my last job, but I have since lost all of the excess weight and am enthusiastically ready to work again.
I honestly feel that my time doing a voluntary job during that year in a charity shop helped immensely.
If you can show a positive in that negative time, it shows many things.
Easy for me to say, right? But I worked without any interruption for 40 years, through the good times and the bad. A poor economy is not a free pass to be idle. There is always something to do.
Empathy, that volunteering is SUCH an admirable thing, and you already know how good it was for YOU!
