Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936), the conservative, Catholic, English author of "Tremendous Trifles" and much else, was at a gathering of literary figures where someone asked what book they would like most to have with them if they were stranded on a desert island. One said the works of Shakespeare, another the Bible, but Chesterton, when pressed, replied, "Thomas' Guide to Practical Shipbuilding".
