In February 2010, a one-armed man swiped a single cufflink from the CJ Vinten shop in Leigh-On-Sea, England, and in March, a one-legged man swiped a single Nike trainer shoe from a store in Barnsley, England. The one-armed man is still loose, but the one-legged man was arrested.

Highlight of A Capable Disabled person: Edward Lear (1812-1888) traveled extensively, including to Egypt and India, as a talented water-color painter of birds, animals, and landscapes. He made marvelous paintings of parrots and did whimsical illustrations for the many limericks he wrote. For a time he even gave drawing lessons to Queen Victoria. Yet Edward Lear had poor eyesight and suffered from epilepsy and asthma. He was a lonely man, often terribly depressed, and was convinced that those who met him were repelled by his ugliness. He took refuge in the wonderful nonsense of his poems. Edward Lear can be counted as one of the persons with disabilities who have made our world a better place, and you will find some of his best limericks among the humor in A Laughter Club.

Sara & I used 2 shop at Stop & Shop in Weymouth, MA. She found I slowed her down in my wheelchair, so I waited past the cash registers or outside 2 get some fresh air. Oftentimes I'd be near a Veteran's table that was collecting money 4 vets (likely Vietnam period, I'd be the right age). I noticed that their donations increased & many folks nodded 2 me ... anything 4 the cause (I was never in any branch of the military)

I just a good friend that lived in Weymouth. He was such a blessing.

A World of Smile

About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college, I was working as an intern at my University's Museum of Natural History. One day while working at the cash register in the gift shop, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.

As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she was kind of perched on her chair. I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and torso. She was wearing a little white dress with red polka dots.

As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink. As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the cutest, largest smile I have ever seen. All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about. She took me from a poor, unhappy college student and brought me into her world; a world of smiles, love and warmth.

That was ten years ago. I'm a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world, I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she taught me.
